Quote of the Show

Sunday's Golden Globes contained no small number of witty shots at any and all celebrities in attendance, some great speeches and some deserving winners (the most obvious of the bunch: Aaron Sorkin, Paul Giamatti and Christian Bale, are among my favourites)  but perhaps my favourite moment was provided by Chris Colfer.

Glee's greatest asset, Colfer's been handed the season of a lifetime by the writers who've been highlighting his character Kurt specifically lately, especially as the stats on gay teen suicide keep mounting. Colfer's elevated the uneven material beautifully and though he may not actually be the greatest supporting actor on TV, he's definitely the most deserving nominee and I was very happy to see him win. I was even happier to see the reactions of his cast-mates at his table, they looked so proud (the usually obnoxious diva Lea Michele even cried for him, it was really kinda nice).

My favourite bit of the eloquent and remarkably calm speech he made after he opened with the sensational line: "I dropped my heart somewhere between Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore, if you find it please return it to me"? As he predictably (and appropriately) dedicated his win to the teenagers everywhere who've been bullied and told they're not good enough, he capped with a triumphant "screw that" to the belittling as he raised his award in the air. It was a lovely testament to how to truly deal with bullies (the way that Kurt is slowly learning this season with a breakthrough in "Never Been Kissed"), don't cry about it, sing sad songs or write out your feelings, say "screw that, you're wrong and this doesn't fly".

That'a boy Chris.

Some Quick Notes on Recent TV

- How I Met Your Mother this week: do the showrunners not know that their characters can't afford the negative connotation smoking brings? The only character who survived this week without me losing a bit of love for them was Robin (who, let's face it, always seemed like a bit of a smoker anyway).

- Accidentally on Purpose: a really pretty terrible episode that I didn't mind so much because Zack is just so darned sweet.

- I'm catching up on this season of Survivor this week. So far, with the blindsides of Erik and Kelly one after the other, it's a pretty entertaining season.

- Little Mosque offers up a highly-quotable if incredibly cheesy half hour that makes me wish they'd return to a good old fashioned Amaar/Rayyann matchup episode, bring back the good natured Rev. Magee and send the pompous (and not that funny) new guy packing.

- Being Erica wraps up with the perfect conclusion to the season. The brilliant Kai story was given a satisfyingly bittersweet ending and Erica finally broke up with Ethan, a long time coming. I've been meaning to post more on this episode so hopefully there'll be a follow up in the coming days.

- The season 4 finale of Dexter got spoiled by a Facebook status update that showed up in my Newsfeed. Could not be more annoyed by this fact.

and

- Golden Globe nominations are out! Three cheers for Big Love, which got a couple of choice nominations (including one for the remarkable Chloe Sevigny), and for Neil Patrick Harris who's still holding out for a supporting actor trophy. That said, gross omissions abound and I've decided that I hate award shows.

Golden Globes Highlights

Tonight's Golden Globes Award Ceremony left much to celebrate. The most notable being:

- KATE WINSLET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! After countless fruitless award nominations, my favourite actress finally gets rewarded for her hard work and immeasurable talent. She wins Best Supporting Actress in a Drama for her flawless portrayal of Hannah Schmitz in The Reader, giving a beautiful and humble acceptance speech.

Also, she's been adorable all night with her best friend and co-star Leonardo DiCaprio and her husband and director Sam Mendes at her side.

Oh, and SHE WINS ANOTHER ONE!!!!!! Best Actress in a Drama also goes to Kate for Revolutionary Road. She can't believe it. I can't believe that she manages to be so freaking awesome, even when freaking out.

- Mickey Rourke. His performance in The Wrestler was a tour de force like I've never seen. He wins Best Actor in a Drama and gives a lovely and not at all embarrassing speech.

- Heath Ledger rightfully wins Best Supporting Actor for playing The Joker. Everyone stands. Chris Nolan accepts on his behalf.

- Tina Fey wins yet again for 30 Rock and gives another flawlessly funny self-effacing speech. Jane Krakowski has a conniption when reading the envelope with Tina's name in it.

And when 30 Rock again wins Best Comedy Series, Creative PoohBah Tina lets Tracey Morgan accept the award instead of her talking again. He says that they had a deal that if Obama was elected Tracey'd get to speak for the show.

- Ricky Gervais congratulates "Winslet" by bringing up her guest spot on his sitcom Extras, in which she, playing herself, says that if you do a Holocaust movie you win awards.

- Emma Thompson jokingly offers to help an adorable Sally Hawkins as she nervously stumbles through her acceptance speech for Best Actress in a Comedy for Happy-Go-Lucky.

- Martin Scorsese presents the lifetime achievement award to his best friend, Steven Spielberg.

- and Kate Winslet. Did I say that already? Oh well, she's awesome, I'll say it again: KATE WINSLET FINALLY WINS AWARDS!!!

The Golden Globe Nominations: does anyone really care?

They all seem either obvious or disappointing to me. For what I've seen this year, I think Slumdog Millionaire is overrated, I'm glad to see Heath Ledger on the list as well as 2 nominations for Kate Winslet, I don't think Mamma Mia is deserving, I'm surprised by the Tom Cruise nomination and I think all the TV awards are hopelessly pretentious and the voters need to redirect their attention towards network TV.

In any case, here are the nominations:

Best Picture - Drama

Best Animated Feature Film

Best Original Song

'Down to Earth'
'Gran Torino'
'I Thought I Lost You'
'Once in a Lifetime'
'The Wrestler'
