Saluting Col. Potter

Actor Harry Morgan died this week at his home in LA after battling pneumonia.

The beloved star lived to be 96 years old in a life filled with decades of first-rate television and film roles like those he played on Dragnet and MASH, 2 landmark series.

Morgan's portrayal of Col. Sherman T. Potter in MASH was, to me, a backbone of the groundbreaking series' best years. Replacing the endearingly goofy Col. Blake, Potter was a highly competent and golden-heartedly serious man. He grounded the series in ways it so desperately needed and Morgan's dry humour served as a perfect counterpoint to Hawkeye and BJ's antics. Col. Potter was one TV's greatest characters and the man who gave him life, Harry Morgan, will be sorely missed.

As a final farewell, here's a last look at one of Morgan's most famous MASH moments.

Spartacus' Inspiring Hero, Gone too Soon

Spartacus: Blood and Sand leading man Andy Whitfield died last night in his home in Sydney after battling non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma for the last year (he was originally diagnosed in March 2010 then declared to be in remission in May, after two months of treatment).

His role in the Starz series having been recast for season two (his replacement was Australian actor Liam McIntyre), Andy Whitfield was seen as a model for gracious behaviour in Hollywood and a hero for his resilience in the face of illness.

The Welsh-Australian former engineer, model and actor leaves behind 2 children and his loving wife Vashti who was with him Sunday night when he passed.

Starz president and CEO Chris Albrecht spoke for the cast and crew of Whitfield's former star vehicle, saying "We are deeply saddened by the loss of our dear friend and colleague, Andy Whitfield. We were fortunate to have worked with Andy in Spartacus and came to know that the man who played a champion on-screen was also a champion in his own life. Andy was an inspiration to all of us as he faced this very personal battle with courage, strength and grace. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time. He will live on in the hearts of his family, friends and fans."

The stunningly handsome Whitfield was in legendary shape at the time of diagnosis and a mere 39-years-old when he died, a terrifying reminder of the utter randomness of such things.

He will be remembered not only as the infamous warrior he portrayed but for the good fight he fought offscreen, for his grace and humility and for the courage he inspired in others.

Casting the Pad

As we learned last summer, Bachelor Pad is a grimy, low-rent ick-fest that is very very difficult to turn away from. So when the casting for the second season was announced this week, I was shamefully excited. They went for the occasional dramatic but boring pick (obnoxious Melissa from Brad's season) and a couple people I've never heard of, completely can't remember or super don't care about (Graham from DeAnna's season, Erica from Lorenzo's,  Ella from Jake's and Alli from Brad's).

1.5 Men+ Ashton Kutcher?

CBS has just announced that celebrity multi-hyphenate Ashton Kutcher will be the man to replace Charlie Sheen when they bring back Two and a Half Men
Here's what executive producer Chuck Lorre had to say:

"We are so lucky to have someone as talented, joyful and just plain remarkable as Ashton joining our family. Added to that is the deep sigh of relief knowing that our family stays together.  If I was any happier, it'd be illegal"

I'd say that Sheen and Kutcher are on about the same celebrity and talent level so the big differences to the show will mostly likely lie in the age difference (Kutcher is 33, Sheen 46) and persona (Kutcher almost perpetually rocks the sweet/goofy thing, Sheen- not so much).
It was predictable that CBS would at least try to keep their flagship comedy alive after Sheen. And though I'm not a fan of the show, I'd like to see them succeed, if only just to make a point to the many many divas who think they run their show, not the writers (Greys sans Katherine Heigl= amazing, MASH without Wayne Rogers= 100x better, the list goes on). I'm also happy to see that entire cast and crew not lose their jobs.

So, Sheen out, Kutcher in. Thoughts? Share in the comments section.

Survivor Badassery: woo hoo!

At the finale of Heroes vs. Villains, Jeff mentioned it might be fun to have the two power-player rivals back to go head to head one day. On February 16 we'll finally get to see that as the 16 new Redemption Island castaways are joined by two of the greatest players ever to play Survivor.

First, there's Russell Hantz. The small little troll man is an imp of deception and manipulation. He steals, he cheats, he belittles the other castaways to within an inch of their self-worth. And he does it well. He's played twice: Samoa and Heroes vs. Villains, and never not made the finale. He's also never won the game. A lot of people say it's because his social game isn't as strong as his strategic one, others that the jury voters are always just bitter and stupid and never reward the right person. While I agree with the latter for the Heroes vs. Villains vote, Parvati should have won, Sandra didn't do anything. I really think Natalie played a really solid game in Samoa. She did the dirty work and strategizing (she did!) when she had to, and played used Russell as much if not more than he used her. She deserved the win. Russell's challenge will be fixing that last piece missing from his impressive game play. Russell has become the icon of recent Survivor history. There have been 4 seasons since fall 2009, he's played in 3 of them. If he makes it to the finals this time around it'll be a record. Rob, who premiered in season 4, has the history of the game behind him, but Russell's got the current climate dominated (not to mention he outlasted Rob by 21 days in Heroes vs. Villains).

As for Rob, he's really three famous Survivor players in one. There's Marquesas Rob from way back when the series was only in its 4th season. He was rough around the edges, manipulative, and voted out early. Then there's All-Star Rob, the 10th place finisher was inexplicably brought back for season 8's assembly of "the best of the best", and it's a good thing he was. With villainous strategy he'd only gotten to show hints of in Marquesas, Rob dominated All-Stars. The catch, though, was that the 25-year-old single guy who was only looking out for himself the first time around fell in love on All-Stars. He was a villain to everyone else but Rob played white knight to his one ally Amber, negotiating their way to the finale and winning her the money (yes, I insist that it was 100% his strategy that led to her win). He proposed on the finale and they've been together ever since (getting married on TV and running the Amazing Race twice along the way), Amber recently gave birth to their second child. So when he came back for Heroes vs. Villains, Rob was understandably a different guy. He hadn't played the game in 6 years, was in a totally different place in his life, and was confronted by strange new twists that had been added since All-Stars (the biggest of which was Russell's iconic tool- the hidden immunity idol). Despite being on the Villains tribe, these factors meant one thing for Rob's gameplay: he played like a Hero. He powered through challenges, taking on a leadership role (like oldschool Colby) and negotiated peaceful tribal voting and a sharing of the inconvenient immunity idol. But the game isn't played that way any more, the great and obvious, powerhouse heroes don't win anymore. Rob was voted out 8th and didn't even make the jury. But much like his 4th place finish on The Amazing Race:All-Stars, Rob ran faster than everyone else, he just got knocked out.

Notoriety will be a major hurdle for both players to overcome but I think Rob's might work in his favour and Russell's against him. When he played Heroes vs. Villains, Russell's season had yet to air, he's never played this game as a famous player- his villain reputation will hurt him a bit. However, he's won Fan Favourite every time he's played, it's possible that everyone will be clambering to climb on his back. Rob, however, proved himself a good leader instead of a backstabby player in Heroes vs. Villains. If they're smart, his team will keep him at least to help them to the merge. My prediction is that Rob will do very well and Russell go out early. But history is very very much not on my side in that prediction. So we'll see.

The Late Last Comic

The funniest judge on Last Comic Standing and one of the best panelists on The Marriage Ref, Greg Giraldo died Wednesday from a prescription pill overdose. His dry wit and sarcastic tones will surely be missed by NBC summer audiences.

On a chastising note, isn't it about time that celebrities smartened up about prescription drugs? We've had too many talented people die over the past 3 years from the same thing, over and over again. It's just not okay. Giraldo's too-soon passing isn't just sad, it's maddening.

ABC Family's Strange and Wonderful New Addition

It's a little old for their demographic and completely inconsistent with the goofball brand, but ABC Family has picked up a show that completely changes the way I view their network. Starting September 7th, you can watch Friday Night Lights every night of the week, right from the beginning.

The brilliant and subtle show is the furthest thing from ABC Family's usual brand of zany sweetness but it does have lots of teen characters (brilliantly developed ones) and core family values (beyond the strippers, the beer swilling and the gang violence lies the show's moral centre in well-meaning husband/wife duo Erik and Tammy Taylor).

Some of (if not most of) the themes will be new territory for the network and its usual audience, but maybe this is an indication of what's to come for ABC Family: quality first.

Goodbye to Another Golden Girl

Rue McClanahan, who played the iconic Blanche Devereaux on The Golden Girls, died this morning after a stroke at age 76.

McClanahan's death is the third tragic blow to the Golden Girls legacy over the past two years: Estelle Getty (Sophia) died in 2008 and Bea Arthur (Dorothy) in 2009. That leaves only 88 year old superstar Betty White (the oldest of the group, currently at the top of her game after a sublime SNL appearance) to carry on the torch for the girls who were once the funniest foursome on TV. But if her vibrancy and resolve are any indication, the wonderful White will be carrying that torch for a long time to come.

The Final Dancer

Today Nigel announced the last dancer in the So You Think You Can Dance season 7 All-Star pool. Though my all-time SYTYCD favourites Danny Tidwell and Katee Shean are predictably not among the lot, the most recent addition is the most exciting yet: season 3's goofball prodigy Neil Haskell, one of the show's most popular dancers ever. And Nigel did make a point of saying that there would be room for more All-Stars next season, so clearly there are plans for this new format to stick around long enough for my favourites to maybe return someday.

Dancing All-Stars...again

Season 4's adorable quirkball Mark Kanemura (of "Bleeding Love"/ "The Garden" fame) joins the upcoming So You Think You Can Dance season 7 All-Star pool.
Easily one of the most exciting additions yet. Still no Katee or Danny though so my dream is not complete.

Another Dancer

The So You Think You Can Dance season 7 All-Star pool welcomes obvious choice but welcome participant Lauren Gottlieb from the superb (and severely under-represented so far) season 3 cast.

The Reality Reality: Dancing, Dumbassery and some other stuff

1) Nigel announced who the female hip hop master is going to be for the SYTYCD All-Star pool and it's the least surprising news since he announced the male hip hopper (Twitch). It's season 4's Comfort Fedoke, the best female popper the show's ever seen from easily its best hip hop season.

2) I'm pretty sure I hate Survivor. After last week's travesty of a vote I was semi-sure I hate Survivor but now with my other favourite gone, Jerri completely coasting and the heroes (the 5 who stepped up to cushion the blow last week a little) threatening to be fooled by misinterpreting the villain tribe dynamics, I'm sure that I hate Survivor, or at least this season. Even if the promo for next week is a red herring (which, let's face it CBS, it probably is), the heroes still aren't proving their smarts along with their skills the way they should. And the villains, oh boy. The only one who seems to see through Russell is Sandra, whom I also can't stand so where does that leave me? Hey Jerri, step up! Your perfect man just got the boot because you made a mistake last week and couldn't recover and make a big move to save him. This week's episode was actually painful to watch. Not only was useless/snarky skeletor saved elimination (again, DON'T TALK BACK TO JEFF!) with my beloved crazyman Coach going in her place but ho bag queen Bee still thinks she's ruling the roost even though it's actually her hillbilly man-toy calling the shots, it took quite a lot of restraint to not hurl things at the TV every time her gloating little snicker showed up. I really just want this to be over so we can get to the reunion episode and see Rob again- is that weird?

3) In happier reality news, The Amazing Race is still progressing as the best season since Nick and Starr took the top prize; Project Runway sent exactly the right 2 people to Bryant Park (go Seth Aaron!) and is forcing a showdown between 2 others (go Mila, I don't like you but I REALLY don't like Jay) which is superfun; I don't watch American Idol regularly but know that the best competitors (Crystal Bowesox!) are holding their own, the worst are being eliminated steadily and the judges heroically stepped in when America tried to vote off the wrong guy this week.

Now back to ACTUAL reality.

Big Dance News

The powers-that-be are seriously toying with So You Think You Can Dance this year, and we think it may actually be a good thing this time. The beloved summer (yes FOX, you heard me, SUMMER) show is changing people, get on board... because we certainly are.

Executive producer, creator, head judge, general pooh bah Nigel Lithgow just announced the new format the show will be taking on, the biggest change since season 2 saw the dancers in consistent pairings and eliminated by judges' choice.

This year there won't be a top 20, it will be a top 10, and only 1 dancer will go home each week. What? You ask, how is that possible, the numbers won't match up?!

Well, according to Nigel, they have a plan, a pretty good one. The top 10 will come out of Vegas week in usual fashion, just fewer of them. Then when they make it to the big stage they'll be paired up with an All-Star. Yup, an All-Star. Past contestants will be back to dance alongside this year's competitors in their specialty style. The first dancer in the All-Star pool, and the most obvious choice, was announced today and it's season 4's fan favourite Twitch who'll be representing hip hop, popping, krump and all things Twitch-y.

Otherwise, the format will stay pretty much the same: only the competing dancers will face the judges, viewers will still vote and the judges will still have the final say in who goes home after incredibly boring and pointless results-show solos.

This sounds like a great idea to me. I love the old contestants (fingers crossed for my favourites Danny Tidwell and Katee Shean to return). But will their presence take away from the competing dancers? If I have old favourites to invest in am I going to care about the new kids? The new format might crash and burn but I like the idea behind it and am psyched to see where it takes the constantly re-invented series.

In related and happy SYTYCD news, Mia Michaels is back on board both choreographing and in the rotating judge's chair (apparently with the guest judges they may sometimes have a fourth member of the panel this season- hello Canada rip-off!). Thank God Mia's back though, the show needs her woo woo artistry and razor sharp critiques to keep them out of saccharine territory. And Mary Murphy will apparently be taking some time out of her permanent judge's chair to choreograph for the show as well.

Big changes, all of them good? Get psyched for the summer when time will tell.

Casting News: Hawaii Five-O

When the remake of Hawaii Five-O was first announced, I predicted a sad attempt at recreating a quasi-classic show. I've barely seen more than an episode of the original police drama due to lack of interest and overall boredom with the plot. Needless to say, the prospects of this new reboot were less than thrilling.

But after two pivotal casting decisions, I'm starting to jump on board and anticipate this series. First, Daniel Dae Kim (of Lost and Angel fame) was cast as Chin Ho Kelly and now the role of his niece has been filled by Grace Park. Fans will recognize Park as Lieutenant Sharon "Boomer" Valerii from Battlestar Galactica. In my opinion, Park was the most underrated of the actresses on the series and her portrayal of Boomer/Sharon will remain one of the best female performances on television. No other actress could have made that role so lovable yet played off the loose morality of the cylons. It's great to see this amazing actress finding a high-profile show post-BSG fame.
